What's wonderful about green-tech like solar is that it can be lumped under the kind of innovation that Obama has talked about to re-engage the US economy. What I'm wondering about GE's latest push though, is whether this means more jobs for Americans.

So many organizations and industry leaders are promoting the green-economy's growing numbers that it makes me hesitant. Here in Southern California, I'm seeing a fair number of people go in and out of business because solar is still pretty expensive and competition is fierce - it's the Wild West!

Will large corporations like GE help stabilize the market?

FEV, OPOC, Achates, Pinnacle (not to mention Navistar and the Asian partners) all in one article!

“The technology is viable,” said Dean Tomazic, vice president of FEV.

If the technology as we know it since well before WWII is viable, why not slant it a little and do more?

At http://www.pattakon.com/pattakonOPRE.htm is a 2 crankshaft opposed piston engine (like Achates and Pinnacle).
At http://www.pattakon.com/pattakonPatOP.htm is a single crankshaft opposed piston engine (like EcoMotor’s OPOC).
At http://www.pattakon.com/pre/PRE16.exe is a range-extender (like FEV’s Wankel range-extender).
At http://www.pattakon.com/pattakonFly.htm is a promising unconventional application.

Dr. Tomazic of FEV also said: “The industry is really competitive, and everyone is looking for good technology that they can get cheaply and meet customer demands.”

Will the author Todd Woody ask the vice president of FEV to comment on these different, but still opposed-piston engines?

Thanks

To the genius that says the leaf wins:

With volt, I can plug it into any wall outlet. With the leaf, they come install a charger at your house. Where will you charge away from home?

Get a clue, stop living on past japanese accomplishments, the volt is getting the awards, and I guarantee the leaf sells less than half the volt within two years. Oh, and the higher price tag is for a totally loaded, attractive car. Not a box sure to be sitting on the side of the road when you realize you underestimated the range at higher speeds.

Driving a car shouldn't be a math test.

Yes, we should not have to suffer ill health so that PG&E can keep their faulty meters. However they want to charge you some pretty hefty fees for something you never wanted and for something that is making some of us ill. We have high medical costs, and this fee is an added burden to the already big problem the meters caused. Why are we having to pay for that mistake?
contact them at public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov and tell them you want the meter removed WITHOUT the fees.

Facing mounting opposition to wireless ‘smart’ meters being rolled out by California utilities, including a total of 34 local jurisdictions who have demanded that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) halt further installation because of widespread reports of health impacts and other concerns, the CPUC signalled at its March 10th meeting that it would ask one of California’s utilities- PG&E- to develop a plan to allow customers to opt out of having a wireless meter installed- at customers’ expense. The plan is expected to be presented at the CPUC’s meeting tomorrow- Thursday, March 24th at 9am, where local government officials and a growing chorus of environmental health advocates will renew demands for an immediate moratorium on installation and hearings on health impacts.

THIRTY-FOUR CA LOCAL GOVTS DEMAND SMART METER MORATORIUM

Smart Meter opponents welcomed the CPUC’s admission that the deepening ‘smart’ meter crisis requires an urgent response, but slammed the meager steps proposed to address it. Lawyers protecting people from Microwave Radiation and the dangers of Smart Meters stated, “Admitting that there is a problem is the first step to fixing that problem. However, an individual opt out at customer expense is a diversion. What if you are too poor to avoid having a wireless meter- is the state saying you have to pay to avoid being totured by microwave radiation in your own home? That sounds an awful lot like extortion. What if you live in an apartment building with dozens of meters on your bedroom wall? The people of California were never asked whether we wanted these meters- nevertheless we are now paying extra for them through higher rates. And now the utilities want to charge us even more to opt out of a program that we never asked for? What is going on here?”

The wireless meters have been widely reported to cause severe and debilitating health effects, long-term, many Cancers, Brain and Salivary gland Tumors, infertility, autism, short-term-nausea, sleep disruption, flu symptoms, headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, memory loss and heart palpitations among susceptible individuals due to the constant bursts of microwave radiation. The movement against wireless meters is the sharp end of a growing movement demanding health-based standards for wireless technology. Michael Peevey, who Gov. Brown has allowed to continue chairing the Commission, has continually insulted individuals with sensitivities to electromagnetic radiation, inferring that they are ‘just making it up.’ Peevey, the former President and Senior Executive of Southern California Edison (SCE) has ties to the telecommunications industry, and continues to chair the Commission that is meant to oversee the utilities, despite popular outrage about clear conflicts of interest. SCE plans to have installed 5.3 million meters between 2009 and 2012.

Health advocates say they will continue protests and civil disobedience until a moratorium is imposed on any further installation, independent hearings on health are scheduled at the state level, and the utilities are directed to remove unwanted meters.

Ok, hate to break the news to you- but the Volt versus Leaf 'war' is not really a war. The Leaf simply wins.

Why?

The Leaf gets the equivilant of 99mpg in its 100 miles range. The Volts gets the equivilant of 97mpg in its 40 miles range.

After 40 miles, the Volt only gets 37mpg from the 40 mile mark to the 100 miles mark of the Leaf.

At the 100 mile mark, the Volt's gas driven mpg drops the total mpg down to 49mpg for the 100 mile trip. It drops to 42 for a 200 mile trip and 40 for a 300 mile trip

The Prius get 50mpg everywhere, all the time.

So the Volt if neither a good electric car or a good hybrid. It will only fit a very very niche market of people. Either you commute far enough to where a Prius is better, or you take few enough trips that renting a vehicle is more cost efficient and eco friendly (especially since you can rent a Prius easy nowadays).

So they are counting around 500k Volts in the electric car count? Then does the Plug-in Hybrid Prius that comes out soon count as well? What about the Ford Plug-in Hybrids? If so, we should be trying to get to 2 million.

If you really only count EV's (not hybrids), then the 1 million number may be tough, especially since major auto makers have only started selling two models.

Excellent post, I can only imagine how strenuous the <a href="http://california.construction.com/research/" rel="nofollow">building construction</a> for a project of this magnitude is going to be. From what I have been reading environmentalists strongly appose projects like this because of their effect on the desert ecosystems. Projects like this significantly help out our environment, but it is unfortunate they must be done at the expense of native animals and plants. This is a very interesting topic, and it is definitely something I want to learn more about. I usually go to McGraw Hill's California Construction site when I want to find out more on issues like this one. It has a ton of information on construction news happening around California. While I occasionally work with McGraw Hill, they have been a favorite construction resource of mine long before we started working together. If you are like me, and enjoy staying current on construction news and information in California, check out McGraw Hill.
